This beautiful merchant's cabinet with 3 drawers is made of solid cherry wood and was manufactured in the USA around 1900 by the Wells-Richardson Company. One drawer has the original metal knob and the other two has makeshift screws.
There are paper labels attached around the counter cabinet. The side shows a woman dyeing cloth in red. A stocking and blouses can be seen hanging on a clothesline above her head. The label on the back shows a colorful star and the text “Diamond Dyes - Color anything. Any color."
The Wells-Richardson Company patented, manufactured, and distributed dyes under the name “Diamond Dyes” in Burlington, Vermont, USA. The company was founded in 1872 and was the largest dyeing company in the late 1800s to early 1900s. The company manufactured dyes, patent medicines, and baby food. Diamond Dyes cabinets were first manufactured around 1890. They were made of cherry, oak, or walnut and were available in various models and sizes. Wells-Richardson went out of business around 1943.
The antique dyeing cabinet shows signs of age and use, including missing paper, scratches, and scuffs on the wood, the drawers are very stiff and one has part of its base missing and there's parts of external trim missing too. It's rough but it's rare and it exists. Please refer to the pictures for detailed views.
